754 S Wabash Ave (312/427-0333). South Loop club with the best local and national acts. Great acoustics and atmosphere; less touristy than other downtown blues clubs.


The Bulls - Jazz
1916 N Lincoln Park West (312/337-3000). One of the city's best late-night hangouts, with live local groups three times a night - last show at 1am.


Lounge Ax - Alternative rock
2438 N Lincoln Ave (773/525-6620). Funky old bar room with a nationwide reputation; hosts the best new alternative bands. Always crowded at weekends.


Metro/Smart Bar - Rock/dance
3730 N Clark St (773/549-0203). Arguably the top live music spot for breaking bands in the city, with the industrial-looking Smart Bar downstairs.

564 W Fulton St (312/648-5500). Chicago's largest and most popular house club, with top DJs and post-industrial decor.
