The Grand Canyon - National Park
81 miles northwest on I-17 (daily 8am–6pm; 520/638-7888; www.thecanyon.com/nps/index.html). It must be the top natural wonder in the US, an unspeakably beautiful mile-deep chasm that you shouldn’t miss. Petrified Forest National Park - National Park


Painted Desert Visitor Center (daily 8am–5pm; 520/524-6228). An enormous prehistoric fossilized forest, plus some of the most picturesque stretches of the Painted Desert. $5 per vehicle.


Wupatki National Monument - National Park
Visitors center (summer daily 8am–7pm, winter daily 8am–5pm; 520/679-2365). Five separate ancient ruins just north of the dormant Sunset Crater volcano, including an ancient Central American-style ball court.


Walnut Canyon National Monument - National Park
Visitor center (June–Aug daily 8am–6pm; March–May & Sept–Nov daily 8am–5pm; Dec–Feb daily 9am–5pm; 520/526-3367). Hundreds of Sinagua cliff dwellings (circa 1125–1250) cut into the shallow Walnut Canyon. $4 per vehicle.Montezuma Castle National Monument - National Park


Visitor center (summer daily 8am–7pm; winter daily 8am–5pm; 520/567-3322). A natural, crater-like 75° Fahrenheit lake, and a superbly preserved, pink adobe cliff dwelling.
